The honest 2026 number
For a standard 300 square foot deck in the Greenville–Spartanburg area, plan on $45–$110 per square foot installed depending on material, height, and railing choice. That puts most projects between $13,500 and $33,000.
Pressure-treated pine sits at the low end. Composite decking with aluminum or steel railing sits in the middle. Screened porches and second-story builds with custom railing land at the top.
What actually drives the price
Height. A ground-level deck is fast. An elevated deck means deeper footings, beefier posts, code-compliant guard rails, and often stairs with landings. Each foot off the ground adds real money.
Railing. A simple pressure-treated rail is a few hundred dollars. Cable rail or aluminum picket with composite top caps can easily be a third of your total project cost. It's also what people notice first.
Decking material. Pressure-treated is $2–$4/sq ft for the boards. Quality composite (Trex Transcend, TimberTech Advanced PVC) is $7–$12/sq ft. The labor to install both is similar — so the upgrade is mostly material.
Where homeowners overspend
Going wider than they actually use. A 16x20 deck looks great on paper but the back half ends up storing a grill cover. Most families are happier with a tighter footprint and a covered or screened section.
Premium boards on a deck that won't last. If your framing is undersized or your flashing is wrong, the most expensive composite in the world is sitting on a ticking clock. Spend on structure first.
Where it's worth spending more
Hidden fasteners, proper joist tape, and stainless or coated structural screws. None of it shows up in the listing photos. All of it adds 10+ years to the deck.
A covered or screened section. In the Upstate, the mosquitoes and afternoon sun make uncovered decks unusable for half the year. Screened porches get used.
